There are so many Folkart Slovakia fujara models, I am confused ?

There are two basic models of FS Fujara / FS FuYara:

  1. Hand-bored Fujara/FuYara - hand bored from natural piece of elder tree (traditional way of making fujara flutes) preserving its specific curved shape together with its harmonics. Every instrument is sort of original.
  2. Lathe-turned Fujara/FuYara - lathe turned from piece of maple tree (all lathe-turned fujara flutes are wonderful playing instrument, sound device tuned by hand.)

The differences in sound/voice between hand-bored and lathe-turned model are very subtle and are not obvious to untrained ear.

Natural fujara/FuYara flutes are made either in 2 or 3 parts. Lathe-turned fujara/FuYara flutes are made in 3 parts only.

FS Fujara/FuYara flutes in 2 parts (natural) are available in F, G and A keys.
FS Fujara/FuYara flutes in 3 parts (natural or lathe-turned) are available in G and A keys only.

FS FuYara flutes are modern tuned fujara flutes playing diatonic major in two octaves:
on G key Fujara from g (G3) - g² (G5).
FS Fujara is less precisely tuned version of FS FuYara (it is traditionally tuned).

FS FuYara

FS FuYara flutes achieve the best grade of 5 stars in tuning category. So, if you prefer more precise tuning to diatonic major , then the FuYara models are the right for you. Similarly as with standard FS Fujara flutes, there are two basic models of FuYara flutes available: Natural or Lathe-turned. Natural FuYara flutes are made in 2 or 3 parts, lathe-turned in 3 parts only. FuYara flutes are available in G and A keys only.

For now, precisely tuned fujara flutes are available in A or G keys only, while the span between lowest and middle hole on precisely tuned fujara flute in F key would be too big to reach.

What is the difference between the natural and lathe-turned fujara ?

The main difference in between the lathe-turned and natural fujara is the wood used and the crafting process.
Natural fujara - hand bored from natural piece of elder tree (traditional way of making fujara flutes) preserving its specific harmonics and shape ( every instrument is sort of original )
Lathe-turned fujara - lathe turned from piece of maple tree (every instrument sounds very similarly, but they all are great instruments )

What is the main difference between 2 part and 3 part fujara?

The lenght of side small air pipe is the difference. With 3 part we can do it only as long as is one part. This means we can make it longer on 2 parts fujara, while the main pipe is split into two longer parts.

What is the difference between hand bored and lathe turned fujara in sound and looks?

Lathe turned fujara is perfectly straight.
Hand bored fujara is naturally curved (following natural curve of the original piece of wood branch used), what is in Slovakia very traditional.

Lathe turned fujara is cheaper while the body is worked out on lathe, which is less demanding than to work out naturally curved branch of wood. If you are looking for best quality-to-price ratio, buy the lathe-turned fujara. However, if you want to look cool and more traditional, hand-bored fujara would be the right choice.

Sound of lathe-turned and hand-bored fujara is almost the same. Still, with VERY CAREFUL listening, lathe-turned fujara voice timbre tends to be little bit clearer / brighter. Hand-bored fujara voice is little shifted toward darker, more haunting timbre. Nonetheless, the differences are very small and hearable by careful direct comparison only.

With all above said, we can still assure you, that you would be completely satisfied with any FS collapsible fujara sound quality, whether lathe-turned or the hand-bored, while there are currently no better sounding fujara flutes on market.

I am not sure if the sound quality is reduced if it is made in 3 parts or whether one piece instruments are the best

To choose /prepare the right fujara for you I need this measurement of your hand:

- open your right hand and measure the distance from TIP (TOP) of your MIDDLE finger to the TIP (top) of your THUMB in cm.
This is actually the furthest distance you can reach with your thumb (middle fujara hole) and middle finger (bottom fujara hole) of your right hand.

Some more answers to the same question:

1/ WOOD:
- we make hand bored FS FuYara from ELDER tree. We make them split in 2 or 3 parts.
- we make lathe-turned FS FuYara from MAPLE tree. We make them split in 2 or 3 parts.
No exemption possible. We know well which wood is the best!

2/ FS Fujara or FS FuYara.
The only difference is the tuning. For foreign people, we promote more precise tuning, so that you could play along with other western-tuned instruments. This means, that 90% of foreign (non slovak) customers will be more satisfied with FS FuYara.
We can make for you FS Fujara for the same price as FS FuYara - the only difference is the diameter and position of the holes. Otherwise they are the same instruments.

3/ Hand-bored vs. Lathe-turned.
This refers to the way the instrument is being made:
- The body of lathe-turned fujara is made and drilled on lathe.
- The body of hand-bored fujara is drilled by hand drill into a natural piece of elder tree. Then it is worked out by hand (with the help of hand machines).

They differ mainly by shape:
- Lathe-turned fujara is perfectly straight.
- Hand-bored are nicely curved (following the shape of the particular branch of elder tree).

On both models, the TONE device is made solely by HAND (using the same method and chisels). So, you can expect very similar voice on both models. Of course, by hand-work, every fujara is a bit different. However, we guarantee perfect workmanship and sound on EVERY FS Fujara or FuYara.
...and we are always improving.

4/ Fujaridoo. It is based on FS Fujara.
Lathe-turned fujaridoo is based upon lathe-turned Fujara.
Hand-bored fujaridoo is based upon hand-bored Fujara.

Lathe-turned fujaridoo: the didge is a bit longer, since it is made out of 2 fujara parts.
Hand-bored fujaridoo: the didge is a bit shorter, since it is made out of 1 fujara part only.

5/ Color.
We make 3 colors. Dark brown, medium brown, light brown.

6/ Delivery
Time of delivery is usually 1 month +- 1 week

We usually custom make instruments upon order. Before we will accept an order, we at least need to know the customer's body height. Based upon customer's height, we will recommend the right fujara model (2 or 3 part fujara).
In the manufacturing process, we customize ALL our FS Fujara/FuYara to fit exactly the customer's body height.

Special note for women:
When somebody has smaller hands (usually women), we can also customize the size and position of the holes. Then, even tiny women can play our FS FuYara or FS Fujara comfortably.

Such customization is possible only on our collapsible FS FuYara or FS Fujara models. We do it automatically for EACH ORDER FREE OF CHARGE.
